Why finding bird flu in a U.S. pig for the first time is raising new worries

The animals can act as “mixing vessels” for human and bird flu viruses

Two pigs eat grass next to a wooden fence with chicken wire attached the the top. A chicken stands next to the pigs while another jumps off the top of the fence.

Because both bird and human influenza viruses can infect pigs, the animals sometimes act as mixing pots where flus can swap genes and adapt in ways that help them infect new hosts.
